Massachusetts Freemen
Massachusetts freemen during the 1600s
Description
In 17th Century Massachusetts to hold public office and to vote, a man had to be declared "free." The confirmation of this title was done by the general court after the candidate provided evidence he was a respectable member of a Congregational Church. This database contains the names of hundreds of men who were declared "freemen" by the state of Massachusetts during the 1600ūs. By 1826, nearly three-fourths of the residents of the six New England states were descendants of freemen, making this database of great value to those with ancestors from this area.
